The 4D seismic method involves acquisition, processing, and interpretation of repeated seismic surveys over a producing hydrocarbon field with the aim of understanding the changes in the reservoir over time, particularly its behavior during production. The goal is to take a three dimensional picture of the reservoir as a result of hydrocarbon production or injection of water or gas into the reservoir at different times, and time becomes the fourth dimension. A typical final processing product is a time-lapse datasets. The difference should be close to zero, except where reservoir changes have occurred.
