Heating of the oil in gearboxes, bearings & bushes is primarily caused by the frictional losses and mechanical inefficiencies of the equipment.

A part of the input power is converted into heat. The amount of heat generated is a direct function of the power being transmitted through the gearbox / bearing / bush and the overall mechanical efficiency of the equipment. The primary purpose of the gearbox oil is to:

  • Remove heat
  • Lubricate
  • Remove the debris generated by wear & tear of the gears.

If the temperature of the oil is high, it will not be able to effectively remove the heat generated. Resulting in further increase in temperature. As the temperature rises, the viscosity of the oil drops and it will not be able to lubricate properly. Lack of lubrication & the higher temperature will result in even larger wear & tear. Therefore more debris is generated. This is a vicious cycle & results in:

  • Reduction in life of equipment
  • Unwarranted maintenance shut down
  • Loss in production & revenue
  • Expenses in maintenance
