How to perform weld repairs properly!!!

  • Repairs should be limited to 8% of the weld length.
  • Repair on repair should not be allowed.
  • Open root repairs should not be allowed.
  • Local through-wall repairs should not be permitted. Joints should be cut out and re-welded.
  • For deep penetration repairs: qualification should include side bend tests, corrosion tests, tensile tests, micro-structure examination, and hardness tests.
  • For shallow (cap) repairs: qualification should include side bend tests, micro-structure examination, and hardness tests.

  • Single pass weld repairs are not allowed.
  • Weld repairs should be a minimum of 127 mm (5 in.) long and 3 mm (0.125 in.) deep.
  • The maximum weld repair depth should not exceed 75 percent of the wall thickness of the part.
  • MT inspection should be performed on all repair grooves prior to re-welding.
  • The removal of weld metal or portions of base metal may be accomplished by the following methods:
    • Machining
    • Grinding
    • Chipping
    • Air-arc gouging
  • Oxy-fuel gouging should not be permitted for removal of weld metal or base metal.
  • The defect should be completely removed and the resulting cavity prepared to the dimensions specified on the repair procedure.  The cavity should be ground as required to remove arc-air gouging residue. 
  • Repairs should be inspected 100 percent by NDE (MT, RT, UT) at least 48 hours after completing the repair, using the method prescribed for the original weld but as a minimum should be MT inspected.
  • All weld repairs should be documented on a weld map and submitted to Company immediately after repairs are complete.
