Assuming you are talking about the pin and box connector for riser connection here. Riser connectors are mounted on the riser connector box, when actuated it mates with a profile machined into the outside diameter of the riser pin. When the complete connector made up, the connection supports all tensile bending and fatigue loads. Furthermore, choke & kill, booster, auxiliary and hydraulic lines are attached to riser connector pin and box with lock and jam nuts. All lines are interchangeable with the choke & kill lines designed for working pressure exceeding 10,000 psi. Booster and hydraulic lines are designed for working pressure of 6,000 psi max. Here is the link to a little more info on the pin & box connector. http://www.ognition.com/842/flange-type-connectors-and-type-connectors-for-riser-joints Hope that helps.

It depends on the manufacturer of the connector. Here is one of the connector's type for information.

  • The connector is a linear make up.
  • The pin and box can be stabbed together.
  • A make up tool (basically a special clamp device) applied to the sleeve connector.
  • Hydraulic fluid will need to inject between the pin and box via an annulus port in the box increase the pressure to create a clearance between the concentric thread grooves.
  • Whilst the make up tool applies linear pressure to snap the pin and box together, release the pressure and the pin and box return to their original state with the concentric grooves providing the tensile strength, resulting in a connection stronger than the base pipe material and with a dual metal to metal seal.
