Decommissioning of electrical cables

If there is a requirement to decommission electrical cables and it is not practical to remove them from their cable ways, what is the proper procedure to decommission without issues?

Follow the below points:

  • All cables from the trunk routes to the existing modules are to be removed along with any associated traywork which is unused.
  • All cores/screens/armours within any cable should to be shorted and connected to earth at the non-hazardous end, to prevent any electromagnetic or electrostatic buildup in a floating cable.
  • Prior to earthing any redundant cable, it should be identified, IR tested and recorded on a redundant equipment list.
  • The cable field end to be caped and earthed using a 3M abandonment kit or equivalent.
