Instrument Arrangement Design & Drawing Checklist


The following Instrument Arrangement Design & Drawing Checklist should be used as a reference when producing instrument arrangement drawings. The checklist can be printed and should be reviewed and all items checked off before issuing drawings.

1. General

☐  Have up-to-date M&E lists, specifications, and reference drawings been used?

☐  Have design and responsibility agreements between other functions been established?

☐  Is dimensioning complete and correct without repetition?

☐  If a number of drawings are involved for the building and sheet numbers are assigned, are these sheet numbers in the proper sequence?

☐  Have all notes been checked for accuracy, location on drawings, and non-duplication of specifications?

☐  Have all continuation notes been shown?

☐  Are drawings properly cross-referenced?

☐  Have all revisions and holds been checked and indicated?

☐  Has the design been reviewed for safety considerations?

☐  Are drawing scales properly indicated?

☐  Have Engineering Standards and Specifications been referenced in PSR?

☐  Has the drawing been checked for all clearances and interferences?

☐  Have all openings in walls and floors been shown on appropriate drawings (elevation drawings, floor sleeve drawings, etc.)?

2. Background

☐  Is the title correct and in agreement with the drawing schedule and the drawing index files?

☐  Does the background contain necessary information?

☐  Have dimensions not relevant to instrument locations been eliminated?

☐  Have building column designations been correctly indicated?

☐  Does the instrument information stand out heavy against the arrangement  background?

3. Instrument  Portrayal

☐  Do the instrument symbols conform to Company Engineering Standard?

☐  Are nonstandard symbols fully explained if used?

☐  Are the service requirements (instrument air, electrical connections, purge material, heat tracing, etc.) for the instruments noted?

4. Instruments on Equipment and in Piping

☐  Are instruments shown in their proper orientation?

☐  Is sufficient clearance for maintenance and installation provided (in particular, level floats and dip tube installations)?

☐  Have the instrument and equipment technical drawings been compared for correct and practical mounting of the instrument? (Do mating flanges and connections agree?)

☐  Do the Piping, Equipment Arrangement, and Diagram Drawings indicate the instrument connections?

☐  Are in-line instruments identified with their pipeline number?

☐  Is the indicator on the field instrument in a convenient visual location?

☐  Can excessive stress and weight be applied to the instrument by piping or supports?

☐  Have in-line instrument items been checked for accessibility and operability?

☐  Do in-line straight pipe runs agree with the engineering standards or vendor recommendations?

5. Field-Mounted Instruments

☐  Are all critical dimensions located from a firm reference?

☐  Are standard instrument mounts or supports used whenever possible?

☐  Is the instrument floor stand support design compatible with the building floor design?

☐  Are instruments located in proper relation to the material being measured?

☐  Are instruments located as close as possible to the process connections?

☐  Are column- or wall-mounted instruments located by bottom elevation of their instrument case?

☐  Will the instrument be subject to excessive vibration, heating freezing, or other hazardous influences?

6. Local Panel Boards, Racks and Cabinets

☐  Are the local panel boards, racks, or cabinets dimensionally located from a firm reference point?

☐  Has the floor specification been checked and noted?

☐  Is a concrete mounting curb required?

☐  Is there sufficient operational and maintenance space surrounding the panel?

☐  Are panel board supports available?

☐  Is the panel board shown on equipment arrangement drawings for clearance purposes?

☐  Is the panel board properly identified with loop number and panel arrangement drawing number?

7. Insertion-Type Instrumentation

☐  Is there adequate clearance for installation and removal?

8. Pneumatic Transmission System

☐  Is the overall intent of the system route understandable?

☐  Have spare tubes been provided?

☐  Have tubing support methods been established?

☐  Are continuation references given?

☐  Have tubing junction boxes been located within reasonable proximity to instrument clusters?

☐  Is a plot plan of the overall tubing system required?

☐  Are underground tube bundles shown on underground lines or civil map?

☐  Are tubing runs that are in fire, acid hazard, or high temperature proximity suitably protected?

☐  Has the shortest practical tubing route been used?

☐  Will a tubing tabulation add to clarity?

9. Electronic Transmission System

☐  Is the overall intent of the system routing understandable?

☐  Have spare cables been provided where required?

☐  Have cable support methods been established?

☐  Have terminal boxes been located within reasonable proximity to instrument clusters?

☐  Is a plot plan of the overall system required?

☐  Are underground cable runs shown on underground lines or civil maps?

☐  Are cable runs that are in fire, acid hazard, or high temperature proximity suitably protected?

☐  Will cable tabulation add to clarity?

10. Instrument Air Distribution System

☐  Does the instrument air header piping system conform to Company Engineering Specification?

☐  Is the loop system of piping required?

☐  Are isolation valves sized and coded?

☐  Are valves required for future expansion?

☐  When the instrument air header piping is located on other function's drawings, are the proper cross-references indicated?

☐  Are line continuation references indicated?

☐  Is an instrument air header diagram, isometric view, or plot plan required for overall clarity?

☐  Has the source of instrument air been established?

☐  Is the capacity of the instrument air system adequate?

☐  Are existing or other functions' supports used where possible?

11. Tabulations and Notes

☐  Have all instrument installation references been properly noted?

☐  Would special instrumentation installation or maintenance notes add to drawing clarity?

☐  Are other functions' key drawings noted in the reference column?

☐  Have all revisions and holds been checked and indicated?

☐  Has the design been reviewed for safety considerations?

12. Instrument Panel Board Arrangement

☐  Was the rear of the panel equipment considered in the layout of the front panel equipment?

☐  Was electrical design consulted for type and location of electrical services? Were separate circuits provided for annunciators, chart drives, instruments, and convenience outlets from the instrument power panel, with physical disconnects at the instrument panel?

☐  Have additions and expansions to the panel board been considered?

13. Instrument Control Room Arrangement

☐  Are the panels arranged with consideration for process operational sequence?

Has the expansion of the instrument control room been considered?

Has sufficient operational, installation, and maintenance space been provided?

Has the type of floor and ceiling been specified?

Are conduits or raceways required in the control room floor?

Are openings required through the control room floor?

Will a steel channel be used to support the panel boards?

Have the locations of trays been shown and the necessary openings provided?

Has the instrument air piping been laid out and provisions made for filter-regulator station in accordance with Company Engineering Standard?

Has the heating and ventilation design function been consulted for ventilation features?

Are sufficient exits from the control room provided?

Has the electrical design function been consulted for lighting design?

Will electrical design require wall space in back of the panels?

Has space been provided for an operator's desk and work area?

Are the key drawings of instruments and other functions noted in the reference columns?

Can panels be moved into the control room through access means provided?  Have removable door transoms been provided?

Are smoke and fire protection systems required?

Is a breathing air system required?

Have special grounding and power supply requirements been considered?
