GLYCOL impurity measurement and quality test guidelines

DETERMINATION OF WATER CONTENT

Water in glycol shal be determined by ASTM E 203, except when the water concentration is less than 500 ppmw, in which case ASTM E 1064 shall be used.

DETERMINATION OF pH

Determination of pH of glycol samples should be in accordance with ASTM D 1293.

NOTE: pH determination is done on a glycol sample which has been diluted with an equal volume of distilled water whose pH has been adjusted to 7.0. Since the dilution is exothermic, care must be taken to calibrate the instrument at the temperature of the solution or, more conveniently, allow the sample to reach room temperature.

DETERMINATION OF INORGANIC CHLORIDES CONTENT

Determination of inorganic chloride content in glycol samples should be in accordance with ASTM D 512 - Method B.

DETERMINATION OF IRON CONTENT

Determination of iron content in glycol samples should be in accordance with ASTM D 1068 - Method A.

DETERMINATION OF HYDROCARBON CONTENT

Determination of hydrocarbon content should be in accordance with ASTM D 3921.
