Your responsibilities

  • Deliver new products and product enhancements as per project schedule following company quality assurance processes.
  • Work with project managers to create or apply existing technology to solve customer issues.
  • Protect new inventions.
  • Develop new designs, cost reductions, and design modifications that will assure product and technology leadership in accordance with the company’s strategic plan.
  • Interface with Product Managers, Project Managers and R&D Engineers during product development and enhancement process to ensure that customer feedback and concerns are addressed in the design.
  • Prepare project level and product documentation based on the requirements.
  • Document product robustness using simulations, analysis, and testing methods.
  • Evaluate test plans and test results.
  • Prepare and maintain product documentation, instruction manuals, project notebooks, and design and test documentation.
  • Arrange design reviews, analyze concepts, and cost effectiveness of the hardware designs.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with purchasing and manufacturing. Assist Purchasing on supplier selection and component evaluation.
  • Write papers, participate in technical meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Protect inventions following ABB intellectual property guidelines.
  • Ensure that development documentation protocols and procedures are followed in accordance with established QA process and ISO 9001.
  • Prepare and maintain product cost estimates and project plans.
  • May require some travel (domestic as well as international).

Your background

  • Masters in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or bachelor’s with 5 to 7 years of Medium /Low Voltage Switchgear / MCC product development experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of Medium Voltage product development experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of electrical equipment product development experience.
  • Experience in Medium Voltage ANSI / IEC Switchgear / Motor Control Center design.
  • Strong background in Mechanical / Electrical Design.
  • ANSI Switchgear or Motor Control Center standards knowledge.
  • Type Testing knowledge at independent labs.
  • Solid works or equivalent 3D software experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in analysis, testing, and creative problem solving.
  • Knowledge of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Reliability (DFR), and new product development processes.
  • Proven experience with electrical power distribution equipment design including protection, motor controllers, power inverters, transformers, meters, etc.
  • Experience working with standards/agencies such as UL, IEEE, etc.
  • Understanding of the National Electric Code and its effect on electrical distribution applications.
  • Experience with arc resistance/mitigation, communication, and protective relays.
  • Experience in simulations for dielectric, static or dynamic forces is desirable.
  • Knowledge of circuit breaker design, instrument transformer & operation principles of protection in electrical power systems is desirable.
  • Knowledge of US patent process is desirable.
  • Experience in R&D Project Management.
  • Excellent oral, writing and documentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Technical leadership ability.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
