ConocoPhillips’ Global Wells Drilling Engineering Team, based in Houston, provides technical and operational support for all our Business Units. Our goals are to drive improved performance, transfer technology, and reduce the overall cost of supply for all our Business Units.

As the Rig Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for coordinating a multi-disciplinary effort in evaluating and deploying technologies across multiple business units in support of increasing safety and operating efficiency. This will include identifying existing technologies and new technologies that can be utilized to drive consistency across the drilling organization. You will be responsible for developing a roadmap with strategic external partners to further ConocoPhillips objectives in automation.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Identifying and communicating best practices and lessons learned with respect to technology implementation
  • Identifying key milestones, establishing KPI’s and tracking progress of automation strategy
  • Identifying technology gaps, required improvements and proposing solutions to meet the automation needs of all business units
  • Influencing external partners’ technology development plans to meet multi-customer and asset needs
  • Implementing common data quality protocols and data architecture hierarchies
  • Establishing and maintaining external networks to understand industry adoption of rig automation (drilling contractors, operators, service companies, universities etc)
  • Building a network within ConocoPhillips drilling organizations to understand industry trends and adopt best practices
  • Identifying ways to improve performance and deliver value without sacrificing safety, quality, production and/or reserves
  • Managing projects and timing in a multi-disciplined environment
  • Coordinating and advising on technology trials in support of rig automation goals


  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or national, or an alien admitted as permanent resident, refugee or asylee
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or foreign equivalent
  • 10+ years of experience with drilling and drilling operations
  • Willing and able (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to travel to support business units approximately 15% of the time on an as needed basis


  • Experience with hydraulic modeling platforms
  • Experienced in ERD well design
  • Knowledge of managed pressure drilling
  • Torque, drag, and casing wear modeling
  • Drilling fluids and solids control
  • Experience/proficiency with Wellview, Spotfire and working with analytics visualizations
  • Analyzes stakeholder needs, global, political, and market trends to understand how they shape the future and impact business results
