Job Duties:

  • The candidate will support the development of material properties data that could support design guides, production qualification and certification, as well as process development
  • The candidate will service as a technical liaison between product engineers and the analytical labs
  • The successful candidate will enhance the capabilities of additive manufacturing technologies used at the site, working within a multi-disciplinary organization and leveraging industry standards
  • Extensive working knowledge of the application of ASTM standards to mechanical testing as well as the influence of process and microstructure on the mechanical properties of metals
  • Working knowledge of materials characterization methods needed to identify microstructures and conduct fractography in support of R&D and product failure analysis
  • Some domestic travel (< 10%)
  • May perform other duties as required

You Must Have:

  • U.S. Citizen in order to obtain a DOE “Q” level clearance
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering (ABET accredited), Physics, Science or related technical/scientific field
  • Some positions within this classification may require unique engineering expertise related to a particular discipline
  • Five or more years of experience in engineering or related technical activities, such as manufacturing, inspection processing, or tool design, including application of advanced engineering principles and technology related to complex technical assignments

  • Master’s degree or doctorate in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering or related field along with significant testing and analysis experience
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical testing including tension, compression, fatigue, and crack growth tests. Familiarity with mechanical testing machine suppliers and commercial mechanical testing service houses
  • Familiarity with ASTM specifications for mechanical testing. Experience developing testing guidelines and procedures.
  • Industrial experience understanding the relationship between various material processing methods (wrought processes, casting, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, etc.) and the resulting microstructure and properties
  • Understanding the effect of environment (i.e. corrosion or elevated temperature) on mechanical performance of metals
  • Experience with steel and titanium metallurgy desired
  • Familiarity with the appropriate application of characterization techniques to acquire microstructural data such as SEM, EDS, EBSD, XPS, XRF, XRD, Auger, ICP, IGF
  • Experience with additively manufactured metals is a plus
  • Experience developing material property design limits (or design allowables) such as for MMPDS or other design handbooks
  • Experience with Granta Material Intelligence or similar database environment is desired
  • Strong leadership ability and the ability to actively contribute to teams or work independently.
  • Experience in the preparation and presentation of technical information to all levels of stakeholders
  • Experience using MS Office Suite desktop applications, such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and responsibilities concurrently
