Basic Function

  • The Refining SME Technology Engineer in Strategic Process Technology (SPT) provides expertise in at least one area of refining technology, provides process design expertise, develops strategic improvement concepts/ideas for mid to long-term improvements in refinery reliability, profitability and the overall business aspects of the assets at the Houston Refinery, and then leads the engineering efforts for the chosen capital projects.  Additionally, the position in corporation with Refinery Technical staff seeks plant optimization and improvement opportunities, leads troubleshooting efforts for complex problems, and mentors others in the organization.  The current open SME position to be filled is for crude processing and fractionation (Crude SME).

Roles & Responsibilities

Maintain an evergreen in-depth knowledge and understanding of assigned processes/technologies/areas and have industry participation and leadership; Refining Technology SME role

Provide process design services for ongoing initiatives and projects at the site

Technology/process focal point:

  • Liaison of all influencing groups for process unit improvement (Reliability, Operations, Economics, Controls, PSM, Environmental, Projects, etc.)
  • Champion of process safety, reliability and flexibility
  • Opportunity seeker and principle driver of improvement change (lead or at least a key role in focused efforts – reliability studies, profitability studies, etc.)
  • Key influencer on manufacturing choices (catalyst, chemicals, equipment, etc.)

Lead the engineering of capital projects including:

  • Front end work of developing Feasibility Studies, Project Request Forms, and Process Design Basis
  • Set the overall technical direction for all phases of design, installation, and startup of grassroots units and unit revamps – Project “Chief” Engineer.  Partners with the Project Manager on assigned projects to ensure successful installation.
  • Lead owner’s process design effort in detailed design and directs EPC’s efforts
  • MOC Responsible Person (RP) for large/complex projects

Supports efforts for medium and long-term asset performance

In area of technology expertise; review, approve and periodically audit (for compliance) unit KPI’s to ensure overall safe, reliable and optimum operation of unit in area of technology expertise

Min. Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering
  • A minimum of 15 years prior experience working as an engineer with relevant experience in the refining, petrochemical, or chemical process industries; with at least 5 years specific to refining.   Will consider less experience with specific skillsets
  • General process design and safety facilities expertise in refining processes
  • Demonstrated Technology SME in at least one refinery based process technology, will consider candidates with sufficient technical knowledge who can develop into this role
  • A background in demonstrative process improvement
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop self and others
  • Provide technology expertise and innovative solutions to solve complex process issues
  • Demonstrate the personal courage and technology knowledge to provide impact and influence at all levels of the organization

Other:

  • Technology assignment will be crude processing and fractionation; experience in this area will be a plus.  Note: assignment area may change per future organizational needs.
  • Generally, 5-10% travel is required; may be higher if supporting a major project
